Shorts

A collection of short videos discussing various topics. Many are collaborations with my wife and practice partner Dr. Sabrina Strickland — because it's more fun to have a discussion than a lecture.

Dr. Gomoll's collection of short video discussions with Dr. Sabrina Strickland — covering partial knee replacement (MAKO and MISHA), MPFL reconstruction, tibial tubercle osteotomy (TTO), patellar instability, ACL surgery decisions, joint preservation, and meniscus tears.

MAKO Partial Knee Replacement

MAKO Partial Knee Replacement

Even though I am enthusiastic about joint preservation, sometimes the damage is just too much for cartilage or meniscus transplants. In the right patient, a partial knee replacement may be an alternative — I have been performing this for 20 years. The system I use most commonly is the MAKO system, which uses a CT scan for 3D planning and a surgical robot to make me more precise during the procedure.

The MISHA Knee Implant

The MISHA Knee Implant

A relatively new option for medial arthritis of the knee. I have worked with the company for over 10 years, helped refine the surgical technique for implantation, and participated in their FDA trial. It's very rewarding to see something develop from the design stage to clinical use.

MPFL Reconstruction

MPFL Reconstruction

One of the most common techniques to stabilize a patella that keeps coming out is a procedure called MPFL reconstruction.

Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy (TTO)

Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy (TTO)

Another procedure to stabilize a patella, or address patellar maltracking and patella alta, is tibial tubercle osteotomy (TTO). We move the attachment site of the patellar tendon on the tibia (shinbone) to a better position.

Patellar Instability

Patellar Instability

What is patellar / kneecap instability and what can be done about it?

Do ACL Tears Need Surgery?

Do ACL Tears Need Surgery?

Lindsey Vonn just tore her ACL, yet she plans to compete. When do you do ACL surgery versus conservative management?

Joint Preservation versus Joint Replacement

Joint Preservation versus Joint Replacement

My specialty is knee preservation. Considering how well Lindsey Vonn is doing with a partial knee replacement, why should anyone bother with preservation — osteotomy, meniscus, and cartilage transplantation? I discuss how maximizing your future treatment options makes sense for many patients, especially the young.

What Is Joint Preservation and Why Does It Matter?

What Is Joint Preservation and Why Does It Matter?

A primer on what joint preservation means and why it can change the long-term outcome for younger patients.

What About Meniscus Tears?

What About Meniscus Tears?

A short discussion on meniscus tears, what types are most common, and when surgery is indicated.

Some Meniscus Tears Can Be Repaired

Some Meniscus Tears Can Be Repaired

Some types of meniscus tears can be repaired, rather than just trimmed — preserving more of the natural meniscus.
